
As life expectancy continues to rise, maintaining health during aging has become a major focus of nutrition research. Rather than simply extending lifespan, scientists are increasingly interested in improving healthspan—the number of years people remain healthy, active, and independent.
Among the emerging ingredients in this field, Urolithin A (UA) has attracted significant attention because of its unique ability to support mitochondrial quality control through mitophagy, a biological process that removes damaged mitochondria and helps maintain cellular energy production. Recent human studies suggest that Urolithin A may become an important nutritional ingredient for healthy aging.
Why Mitochondrial Health Matters
Mitochondria are often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell because they generate the energy required for nearly every physiological process. As people age, mitochondrial function gradually declines. Damaged mitochondria accumulate, leading to reduced cellular energy production, increased oxidative stress, and impaired tissue function.
This decline has been associated with several hallmarks of aging, including:
1. Reduced muscle strength and endurance
2.Lower physical performance
3.Chronic low-grade inflammation
4.Declining immune function
Maintaining mitochondrial quality has therefore become a promising strategy for supporting healthy aging.

Urolithin A: A Mitophagy Activator
Unlike conventional antioxidants, Urolithin A works through a different mechanism. It activates mitophagy, the body's natural recycling process that selectively removes dysfunctional mitochondria and promotes mitochondrial renewal.
By improving mitochondrial quality rather than simply reducing oxidative stress, Urolithin A represents a new approach to supporting cellular health and energy metabolism.
What Does Human Research Show?
A 2024 systematic review published in Ageing Research Reviews evaluated all available human clinical studies investigating Urolithin A and healthy aging. The review included five clinical studies involving 250 healthy participants who received Urolithin A at doses ranging from 10 mg to 1,000 mg per day for periods of 28 days to four months.
Across these studies, researchers reported several encouraging findings:
1.Dose-dependent reductions in inflammatory biomarkers
2.Increased expression of genes related to mitochondrial function, autophagy, and fatty acid oxidation
3.Improvements in muscle strength and endurance
4.Good safety and tolerability, with only mild or moderate adverse events unrelated to supplementation
At the same time, the review emphasized that current evidence is still limited. No consistent improvements were observed in body composition, cardiovascular outcomes, overall physical function, or maximal ATP production, highlighting the need for larger and longer-term clinical trials.
New Evidence: Supporting Immune Health During Aging
Healthy aging involves more than maintaining muscle function—it also requires preserving immune competence. Age-related immune decline, often referred to as immunosenescence, contributes to increased susceptibility to infections and chronic inflammation.
In 2025, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in Nature Aging investigated whether Urolithin A could help address this challenge.
In the study, 50 healthy adults aged 45–70 years received either 1,000 mg of Urolithin A daily or a placebo for four weeks. Researchers observed that Urolithin A supplementation:
1.Increased populations of naïve-like CD8⁺ T cells associated with healthier immune function
2.Enhanced fatty acid oxidation in immune cells
3.Improved mitochondrial biogenesis within CD8⁺ T cells
4.Increased beneficial natural killer (NK) cells and nonclassical monocytes
5.Produced favorable changes in immune-related inflammatory pathways
Importantly, supplementation was well tolerated, and no significant safety concerns were reported during the intervention. These findings suggest that improving mitochondrial quality through mitophagy may also contribute to healthier immune aging.

Looking Ahead
The growing body of clinical evidence positions Urolithin A as one of the most promising ingredients in the healthy aging category. Rather than targeting a single symptom of aging, it supports a fundamental biological process—mitochondrial quality control—that underlies multiple aspects of age-related decline.
Although additional long-term studies are still needed, current human research indicates that Urolithin A is safe and may help support mitochondrial health, muscle performance, and immune function as part of a healthy aging strategy.
